Every week, Bazaar's booking team highlights one name to note, from the industry's best-known faces to girls who are just starting out. This week, they turn their attention to Achok Majak...
Nothing beats a classic, strong beauty and Majak's striking looks hark back to the days of Linda Evangelista, Claudia Schiffer and Naomi Campbell. While she wouldn't seem out of place in the 90s era of the supermodel, there is something modern about Majak's allure that has made the Californian a firm favourite of top photographers and designers. Max Mara, Acne, Gucci and Zac Posen featured the 23-year-old prominently on their runways.
"I knew when she walked in to first meet with me that she was something special," says Jason Sobe at Red Model Management NYC. "She carries herself well and has a tremendous spirit. Always positive and forever intrigued by her surroundings, she's just an amazing person and deserves nothing but the best."
Blessed with incredible bone structure, charisma in abundance and the kind of physique that was seemingly destined for the catwalk, this newcomer has plenty of potential. We chatted with Majak about sport, California and Liya Kebede.
How were you discovered?
"I've been scouted several times. My entire life people have told me to model and when I was ready, everything started."
If you weren't modelling, what career would you pursue and why?
"I would pursue a career in sports! I'd like to do sports journalism, possibly broadcasting. I'm honestly not 100 per cent sure what I would do specifically, but it would definitely involve sports."
How do you spend your free time?
"I love to hang out with my boyfriend, be in nature, laugh, cook, drink tea, read, meditate, go to bookstores, watch sports, do yoga, go to the movies and pretty much chill."
Do you have any travel tips for those visiting your hometown?
"Explore California. California is my home, they have the best people and the most beautiful scenery. California comes from a natural love, happiness, compassion, and the people from there are incredibly kind, welcoming, caring, and loving towards each other and all people.
What are the three products you can't live without?
What is your favourite form of exercise?
"Bikram yoga and running. I love the combination of yoga and running because I'm pushed mentally, physically, and spiritually. I'd recommend any workout really, but would encourage whatever workout works best for you. I highly recommend that you commit to it."
What is your dream shoot?
"Wiz Khalifa would be dope. I'd love to shoot anywhere that has a beautiful view and kind people – the Tropics are always good. As for a photographer, I'd love to shoot with Steven Klein."
Name your five essential items you wouldn't leave the house without..
"My phone (including charger), water, lotion, hand sanitiser, and a good book."
If you had to wear only one designer, who would it be?
What kind of advice would you give to new girls to the industry?
"Stay focused, grounded, grateful, humble, and enjoy the industry. Not many people get to experience being a high-fashion model, so just enjoy the ride."
Is there a model's career that you admire and why?
"Liya Kebede! I love and admire her work as a model and what she has made of her career. She is beautiful, a philanthropist, and influential."
Let's talk about favourites. What about…
…music? "Michael Jackson and Fetty Wap."
…movies? "I can't say I have a favourite movie because I like so many. I love comedies, action and documentaries. I don't like scary movies at all."
…books? "I love books that teach me about angels, the laws of attraction, meditation, being mindful or anything inspirational."
…food? "I love salmon (it's my favourite), avocado, arugula, greens, and vegetables... I love them raw, juiced, steamed, and roasted. I also love dim sum, sushi, Thai, and Italian too!"
